This novel takes place in the countryside of 19th century England. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have been asked to look into the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville. although Sir Charles' death has been ruled a natural one, his friend and physician, Dr. Mortimer, questions the coroner's decision. having found a huge hound print beside Sir Charles's body, Mortimer wonders if the Baskerville curse - death as a result of being attacked by a huge dog - is what really caused Baskerville's demise. When the latest Baskerville heir, Sir Henry, receives a warning letter telling him that his life is in danger, Watson is sent of Devonshire to protect him. While in Devonshire investigating, Watson encounters several suspicious characters and witnesses many strange events. He especially disturbed to hear the chilling howls of a mysterious beast out on the desolate moor that surrounds the Hall. Matters are complicated when Sir Henry falls in love with a neighbour and a murderous convict escapes from the local penitentiary. Although Sherlock and Watson succeed in cracking the case, it is not without many surprising twists in the plot.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is credited as being Sherlock Holmes' most famous and most chilling case.

Although the vocabulary is difficult, with the simplified chapter summaries included in this novel studies, even weak readers can enjoy the plot.
